Weekend retreat for an Art Collector and his family

The concept for this house translates the fluid curves of the surrounding topography - rolling slopes, hills, and valleys – into a set of geometrical forms that make a home.

The brief called for an adaptable space that would create harmony between the architecture and the existing natural environment.
The clients are an Athenian couple looking for space away from the city. Reflecting their interests there will be a library and a kitchen garden.
The location on the plot allows for a building with minimal interventions in the landscape, while the orientation utilises energy-saving opportunities in all seasons.
A single corridor will serve as the central axis, connecting and organising spaces in a linear fashion, and creating distance between the bedrooms.
The corridor will also act as a gallery for the owner’s photography collection and as a reading area adjacent to the library.
In an environment where nature dominates, the design integrates the house into the landscape via well thought out planting and green roofs.
Separate building volumes will create groups of rooms. On the west side, one volume houses the children’s bedrooms, and to the south, another contains the living room, dining room, and kitchen. To the north, a distinct volume contains a master bedroom and an office separated by a patio, and a second volume includes a parking space, guest WC, and cloakroom.
External verandas around the perimeter offer a smooth transition between the house and landscape, with views of the pool, a nearby forest and the horizon.
The building’s utilities are located in a basement, while freestanding stone walls provide shelter from the elements for outdoor areas.
The swimming pool will be built at a lower elevation than the house, with an adjacent outdoor living space and pergola that will be accessible via a staircase from pool level.
