All day bistro, Athens

A contemporary bistro in historic Athens

Inspired by its location, in one of Athens’ oldest neighbourhoods, Gargaretta is a relaxed all-day bar and bistro, designed for both locals and tourists alike.

The clients, a family with a long history in the hospitality sector, wanted to create a new, comfortable space in this historic, lively neighbourhood.
Located moments from the Acropolis, the space serves as a relaxing place to stop en route to, or after visiting the archaeological site.
Originally cultivated by the eponymous Gargaretta family, who moved to the city in the Middle Ages, the area has a distinct atmosphere. Lively, vibrant and welcoming, it is popular with young couples and tourists.
The client wanted to create a friendly space for Athenians and newcomers to the city, so the menu, deliberately eclectic, is a modern interpretation of flavours one finds in local recipes.
Stavropoulou Architects drew inspiration for the project from the city of Athens, which exists in a constant state of evolution and flux. We wanted to blend the future and the past, repetitive patterns and contrasts.
The city’s complexities and diversity are reflected in all the elements of our interior design. As usual, we collaborated with a select group of highly qualified craftspeople who helped develop our ideas and bring them to fruition.
There was a very smooth cooperation with the implementation team that helped to make the ideas come to life. The existing material elements of the site were retained where possible. A pink marble floor from the 1980s guided the overall colour palette and new materials were chosen for their ability to enhance and complement it: Light tones were chosen for the wood, unpainted steel and a bright warm red.
Sound plays a key role within the space – 4000 metres of sound absorbent material was hand-knitted to cover the ceiling and creates a welcoming and calm environment conducive to conversation and connection. The aesthetic appeal retains a natural organic identity of the space.
